BLOG 1 - COVID 19 Pandemic's Impact on Human Resource Management


Acceleration of digitization processes is one of the economic effects of the worldwide pandemic (Covid-19). Organizations must increasingly leverage digital channels to provide employees with fast access to jobs. Human Resource Management is critical in assisting organizations in navigating through the drastic changes brought on by the pandemic lockdown.

The Role of HRM in the Adaptation of the Workforce

The recent Covid-19 outbreak has put human resource managers under a lot of pressure. In the face of huge changes around the world as a result of the epidemic, businesses must respond and adapt, and manage their employees properly (Carnevale and Hatak, 2020). 

HRM is critical in assisting employees in addressing the challenges posed by unforeseen workplace and societal developments (Carnevale and Hatak, 2020). 

As a result, HRM should take the lead in assisting organizations in navigating through uncertainty, taking into account the needs of skill development and employee mental health. Companies that are planning for the future must change their focus to include both business continuity and organizational wellness.

Disruptions in HRM Caused by Pandemic

In general, the respondents mentioned three types of cases they observed in terms of companies’ attitudes towards employees: 

(1) Some companies have been closed and hence dismissed all employees. 

(2) Many companies have retained employees by sending to unpaid leaves.

(3) There are companies that retained employees giving them salaries. However, some companies managed only to retain the senior staff with salaries

The Future Roles of HRM
The respondents determined that, at first look, the crisis revealed the need for more understanding among HR professionals; despite years of experience, many of them lack skills and education, particularly in crisis management.

• There is a huge competition in the market, 
• Companies need highly developed people with the relevant knowledge, 
• More importantly with special skills who can adapt quickly to the environment, 
• who can master new competences, are receptive to innovations, have the ability to learn, and possess creative innovative skills. 
• build flexible processes, adopt new technologies, and create scenarios for business process continuity.

Conclusion
From the perspective of HRM, this blog attempted to investigate how the Covid-19 outbreak influenced HR managers' activities and how organizations responded to the issue.

Employees and businesses are adapting to the changing environment in order to achieve their goals. In order to respond quickly, internal communication should be prioritized in this area. As a result, team spirit, camaraderie, teamwork, and cooperation are required to survive in this changing environment. HR management makes a big contribution by introducing online HR processes and training employees not only in the skills required to perform present activities, but also in the skills required in the future if circumstances change. These challenges should be addressed by HRM in staff development initiatives.

  8. The Corona virus continues to dominate the world, and we can't predict when it will stop, so we can't shut ourselves up indefinitely. We must all carry on with our daily responsibilities while prioritizing our health and mental well-being. Our economy should continue to run smoothly. Employees should be able to work in a comfortable environment based on the efforts of the HR department and HR authorities. The best way to deal with these stressful times is to communicate with the employees. Then, in order to stay connected, suitable technology and infrastructure are required, as well as frequent meetings via virtual platforms where HR plays a vital role in every aspect.

But the technology played a major role to overcome this situation and to continue the businesses.
